Frequently Asked Questions
Supported Independent Living (SIL) refers to a type of assistance that helps individuals with disabilities live as independently as possible while receiving tailored support for their daily living needs. SIL often involves shared or individual housing where support staff provide assistance based on the resident’s goals and requirements.
SIL operates by assessing an individual’s needs, goals, and preferences and providing structured support in a home-like environment. This support can include help with personal care, cooking, cleaning, or managing medical needs. Individuals typically live in shared accommodations with others or alone, and the level of support can vary from part-time to 24/7 care, depending on their funding and personal needs.
Services provided in SIL may include:
- Personal care (e.g., bathing, dressing, grooming)
- Household tasks (e.g., cooking, cleaning, laundry)
- Social and community engagement
- Medication management
- Skills development (e.g., budgeting, cooking)
- Transportation assistance
- Emotional and behavioral support

- Supported Independent Living (SIL): Combines the independence of living in one’s own home with tailored support services to assist with various tasks, ensuring safety and a higher quality of life for those who require assistance.
